The poem tells us about a four a year old, young girl, Betty, who has just arrived home, after attending a party and tells her mom about all the details of the party. She mentions about a little girl who fell off a chair on to the floor at the party and all the other little girls began to laugh except Betty. Her mother asks Betty for the reason, curious to know whether it was her sweet nature and kind heart which stopped her from laughing. But on the contrary, Betty tells her mother that she wasn’t laughing as she herself had fallen down.
