Question 1: Where and with whom did Mr. Hoppy live?

Answer: Mr. Hoppy lived in a small flat which was high up in a building. He lived alone.

Question 2: Name the two loves in Mr. Hoppy’s life.

Answer: The two loves in Mr. Hoppy’s life were the flowers which he grew in his balcony and his other love was Mrs. Silver.

Question 3: Where did Mrs. Silver live? What interaction did she have with Mr. Hoppy?

Answer: Mrs. Silver lived in the flat below the balcony of Mr. Hoppy. They interacted every morning and exchanged their conversation about her small tortoise Alfie.

Question 4: Read and answer the questions:

“Here’s the heart of the lettuce for you, my lovely….”

(a) Who said these words and to whom?

Answer: Mrs. Silver said these words to Alfie.

(b) Who was watching the speaker and where was he?

Answer: Mr. Hoppy was watching the speaker and he was in his balcony.

(c) Why did the speaker tell the other person about ‘my lovely’?

Answer: The speaker told the other person about her lovely that he should grow a little faster.

Question 5: Who did Mrs. Silver love?

Answer: Mrs. Silver loved her small tortoise Alfie.

Question 6: What plan did Mr. Hoppy suggest to Mrs. Silver to make Alfie grow faster?

Answer: Mr. Hoppy wrote down some words backward and told her to whisper those words to Alfie three times a day to make him grow faster.

Question 7: Describe Mr. Hoppy’s tortoise catcher.

Answer: Mr. Hoppy’s tortoise catcher was a long metal tube. It was long enough to reachMrs. Silver’s balcony. Two metal claws were attached to the end of metal tube to hold the tortoises.

Question 8: What did Mr. Hoppy do after his conversation with Mrs. Silver?

Answer: After the conversation with Mrs. Silver, Mr. Hoppy bought one hundred and forty tortoises and with the help of his tortoise catcher, he picked up Alfie and then dropped a similar looking tortoise in Mrs. Silver’s balcony. He repeated this process with gradually bigger tortoises.

Question 9: Read and answer the questions:

“And your magical words did it! You are a miracle man, you are indeed!”

(a) To whom did Mrs. Silver say these words and why was she shouting?

Answer: Mrs. Silver said these words to Mr. Hoppy. She was shouting because her wish came true and she believed that Alfie had grown enormously.

(b) What were the magical words being referred to?

Answer: The magical words referred to were the words written backward by Mr. Hoppy for Alfie.

(c) What miracle had the man performed?

Answer: The man had apparently transformed the low weighing tortoise into enormously grown tortoise. However, actually he had changed the animal.
