Force, Work and Energy Questions & Answers

Question 1: Fill in the blanks:

(a) Light is a form of energy that enables us to see things around us.
(b) When an object vibrates, sound energy is produced.
(c) The stored energy in a battery is called potential energy.
(d) Sound is the movement of energy through substances in the form of waves.
(e) An object thrown upward comes down towards the ground due to gravitational force.
(f) The stretched catapult is an example of potential energy.
(g) The force exerted by water is called the buoyant force.
(h) Friction causes wear and tear.
(i) Magnetic force is the force exerted by a magnet on metals and other magnets.

Question 2: Write True or False:

(a) Electrical energy is generated in the meter box of our homes – False
(b) A plastic ball floats on the water due to buoyant force applied by the ball – True
(c) A plastic ball floats on the water due to buoyant force applied by the ball – False
(d) Work and energy are interrelated – True

Question 3: Identify the force involved in the each of the following:

(a) Paper clips get attracted towards a plastic comb.

Answer: Electrostatic

(b) The horse pulls a cart.

Answer: Muscular force

(c) A ball slows down on the floor.

Answer: Magnetic force

Force, Work and Energy Questions & Answers

Question 4: Define the following terms:

(a) Mechanical energy

Answer: Mechanical energy is the energy that is possessed by an object due to its motion or due to its position.

(b) Gravity

Answer: The force exerted by the earth to pull the object towards itself called gravity.

(c) Force

Answer: A push or pull acting on an object is called force.

Question 5: Give one example of the following:

(a) A natural source of heat.

Answer: Sun

(b) A non-renewable source of energy.

Answer: Petrol

Question 6: What energy transformation takes place when we switch on a television set? How can the law of conservation be proved here?

Answer: When you switch on the television set, electrical energy get transformed into light energy, sound energy and heat energy. The amount of electrical energy provided to the television gets converted into other forms of energy hence law of conservation of energy is proved.

Question 7: What is kinetic energy? Give one example of an object that possess the kinetic energy.

Answer: An object possesses mechanical energy due to its motion called kinetic energy.
Example: cycle is moving possesses kinetic energy.

Question 8: State the law of conservation of energy.

Answer: The law of conservation of energy states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It can be transformed from one form to another. The total amount of energy in the universe always remains constant.

Question 9: Give reasons:

(a) We should avoid the excess use of non-renewable sources.

Answer: We should avoid the excess use of non-renewable sources because non-renewable sources of energy cannot be renewed for millions of years.

(b) Wind power plants are eco-friendly.

Answer: Wind power plants are eco-friendly because these do not cause pollution.
