Question 1: What is Culture?

Answer: Culture of a place and time is reflected in the monuments built by the people, the clothes they wear, the language they speak or write, their dance, music, etc.

Question 2: What is Heritage?

Answer: Heritage refers to things that are inherited from the past. Socio-cultural, political and economic developments traditions of the past have remained dynamic among the people as they have been passed down from generation to generation.

Question 3: What is the difference between Material and Non- material Heritage?

Answer: Material Heritage refers to buildings, statues, monuments books and paintings which tells us about the culture of the time. Non-material Heritage consists of traditional customs, values, rituals, tales, language, music and dance that have been passed from generation to generation through oral resources.

Question 4: What are the important sources of literature?

Answer: The important sources of literature from the past till date are- poems, songs, ballads, chants and famous collection of stories.

Question 5: Name two famous books of collection of stories?

Answer: Two famous books of collection of stories are Panchatantra and Jataka.

Question 6: Which language has enriched Indian literature immensely?

Answer: Sanskrit language has enriched the Indian literature immensely.

Question 7: What is painting? Name the different types of painting?

Answer: Painting is one of the finest arts that give beautiful expressions to man’s thoughts and feelings. Indian paintings date back to the period for which we have no written evidence. Different types of paintings are:

  • Warli painting
  • Madhubani painting
  • Kangra painting
  • Kalighat painting
  • Thanjavur painting

Question 8: Describe various Types of Paintings.

Answer:

Warli painting

It inherits its name from Warli tribe of Maharashtra. They depict the social life of people and they are done on the walls of the house.

Madhubani painting

It is characterized by use of bright colours. They are made on walls, cloth and paper. They are also known as Mithila art of Mithila region of Bihar.

Kangra painting

Named after the place Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. These paintings are inspired by the beauty of the people of the Kangra valley.

Kalighat painting

These depicts the urban society of Calcutta.

Thanjavur painting

These paintings are made of semi-precious sones and gold foil. These paintings mainly consist of Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

Question 9: What is sculpture? Give an example.

Answer: Sculpture is a form of art in which certain materials such as stone, wood, clay, etc. are worked upon to create three-dimensional objects or figures to be embodied on walls or various surfaces etc. For example – The Lion Capital from the Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath .

Question 10: What is conservation?

Answer: Conservation means to protect, guard and preserve something for the future. The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) is a premier organisation that works for conservation of monuments and natural Heritage areas worldwide.

Question 11: Write short notes on the following.

Answer:

Jantar Mantar: It is an astronomical observatory built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur in the 18th century. Jantar Mantar consists of 16 different instruments to take astronomical readings.

Hill forts of Rajasthan: The forts of Rajasthan are massive in size with palaces of kings and queens, trading centres markets and everything inside it like Nahargarh, Amber, Jaipur, Jaisalmer and so on.

Sun Temple, Konark: Famous for its chariot like shape that has seven horses and twenty-four wheels. It was built by King Narsimhadeva in 13th century and depicts the Sun God Surya travelling across the heavens.

Humayun’s Tomb: One of the first and finest monuments of The Mughal rulers. It is believed to have been designed by his queen Hamida Banu Begam. It is the first garden tomb of India.

Meenakshi Temple: It is in Madurai, dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, and was built by King Kulashekarar.
