Question 1: What kind of a person was Goddess Ceres? When was she most happy?
Answer: Goddess Ceres was a loving, doting and extremely protective mother. When angry she would kill all the crops and that is why everyone tried to keep her happy.
She was the happiest when she was with her daughter, Proserpine.
Question 2: Read and answer the questions:

Answer: The speaker is Goddess Ceres.

Answer: The daughter is Proserpine.
(c) What did the speaker do when Pluto took her daughter away?
Answer: When Goddess Ceres could not find her daughter, she declared that no crops would grow and famine would destroy mankind.

Answer: Pluto was the king of underworld. His kingdom was strange, dark and gloomy. The sun never shone and the only light was from the underground fires. There were black lakes and large caves.

Answer: As Pluto fell in love with Proserpine, he carried her away on his chariot forcibly and took her to his kingdom. He wanted to marry her and make her his queen.

Answer: Proserpine did not eat anything in Pluto’s kingdom because she was scared that if she ate there then, she would never be able to leave that kingdom. Even if she left, she would have to come back there again.

Answer: Proserpine never ate anything in Pluto’s kingdom because she was scared that if she ate then, she would never be able to leave Pluto’s kingdom. Even if she leaves, she would have to come back there again.

Answer: After Pluto took Goddess Ceres’ daughter away, she declared that nothing on Earth would grow until Proserpine was returned to her. The Earth would be uncultivable and crops would die. Famine would destroy all mankind and there would be none to honour the Gods.
Question 8: What kind of a mother was Ceres? Was her act of destroying the crops and bringing on famine justified?
Answer: Ceres was a very loving and caring mother. She found happiness in her daughter’s smile and was happy to just be with her. She would become very angry if her daughter was troubled and became merciless in those occasions.
Her act of destroying the crops bringing on famine was not justified because by doing so she brought suffering and grief to the common people who were not responsible for Proserpine’s unhappiness. People suffered for no fault of theirs.
Question 9: How was Jupiter different from his brother Pluto?
Answer: Jupiter was different from his brother Pluto in many ways. Jupiter was hard working, helpful and always a positive person. His kingdom was bright, beautiful and cheery. On the other hand, Pluto was the king of the underworld and he liked darkness, gloominess all around. The sun never shone in his kingdom and it had dark lakes and great caves. Mere visiting his own temples in the world above made him cringe and faint. All these show Pluto as dark and negative, different from Jupiter, his brother.
Question 10: Do you think Mercury was a smart negotiator? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer: Yes, Mercury was a smart negotiator because he managed to strike a deal to which all three parties – Pluto, Ceres and Prosepine agreed. They were all satisfied with the terms and thus, mankind was saved.
