Question 1: What was the motive behind the town’s behavior at Deepavali?
Answer: All the residents of the town were sending gifts at Deepavali so that they could be the most generous persons and receive the garland that would fall from heaven.
Question 2: How was Sakhu different from the zamindar’s daughters? Give examples from the play?
Answer: Sakhu was different from the zamindar’s daughters because she sacrificed her share of dinner to feed the orphan boy and let him sleep in her room. She had never been to school but she thought of the idea of hanging the lanterns outside and closing the doors and windows before lighting the diyas inside the house.

Answer: Sakhu said these words to Heeri, one of the zamindar’s daughters.

Answer: She said these words because Heeri said that everybody in the town was sending gifts in the hope of receiving the garland from Heaven and she asked Sakhu what she would gift.
(c) Did she really have nothing to gift?
Answer: Sakhu did not have any material things to gift but she had an abundance of selfless love and compassion which could make a lot of difference to anybody who received it.

Answer: That year, in Amod, dark clouds gathered in the sky and lightning and thunder struck every few minutes. There were no lights anywhere and the entire town plunged into darkness.

Question 5: Why did Sakhu think there had been a mistake when she received the garland?
Answer: Sakhu thought that there had been a mistake when she received the garland because she had not given any grand gifts. She did not deserve it and she said that the garland must have been meant for the three sisters.

Answer: Sakhu’s behaviour was completely different. She knew that she had nothing worth gifting and she hoped that the zamindars daughters would receive the Garland for giving away expensive gifts. She tried to dispel the darkness on the night of Deepavali by hanging lanterns outside and lighting diyas inside the house. When the young orphan boy knocked on the door, she took him in despite the sister’s objections and gave him hot water to bathe and even gave him her share of the festive dinner. Se let him sleep in her room and did not mind the discomfort she had to put up with to take care of the boy’s needs. Se braved the anger and displeasure of the zamindar’s daughters because she was compassionate and wanted to help the orphan.
Question 8: What was the motive, or reason, behind the town’s behaviour in Deepavali? (in 80-100 words)
Answer: All the residents of the town were busy sending gifts before Deepavali. The zamindar’s three daughters were also packing gifts with the help of Sakhu. Heeri had received a book from school which she was giving away to her friend. Manki was sending one expensive silk saree to her friend and Rupi was sending her new favourite doll to a friend in Indapur. Everybody hoped to receive the Garland of fragrant flowers that fell from Heaven by doing such acts which they thought were generous and kind. The Garland had not descended for twelve years and all the people of the town were expecting that it would fall on the neck of one who had given the most generous gift.
