Question 1: Why did Mr Nuttel come down to the rural retreat?

Answer: Mr Nuttel was suffering from some ailment of the nerves and he had come to the ‘rural retreat’ to recover from his ailment.

Vera went on to say that this tragedy had mentally disturbed Mrs. Sappleton and she believed that they would come back through the window, they had left through. So, she kept the window open every evening till it was dusk. Vera added that while leaving, Mr Sappleton was carrying his white waterproof coat over his arm, and Ronnie, her aunt’s youngest brother, was singing ‘Bertie’, why do you bound?’

She fabricated a story and told her aunt and the others that Mr. Nuttel had once been chased by a pack of dogs into a cemetery, and he accidentally had fallen into an open grave with the dogs snarling at him from above. This had developed in him a fear of dogs.
