The Paint Box Questions & Answers

Question 1: Find the names of eight colours in the poem.

Answer: In the poem, the names of eight colours are – cobalt, umber, ultramarine, ivory black, emerald green, crimson, white and purple.

Question 2: How many people are speaking in the poem? Who are they?

Answer: There are two people speaking in the poem. The first one is a painter and the second one is his friend (or someone close to the poet).

Question 3: Why is the painter using the different colours to paint?

Answer: The painter is using different colours to paint a beautiful picture. Actually, he wants to express his emotions through colours. He wants to show the endless possibilities of art and imagination.

Question 4: Read and answer the questions:
“You painted them true.”

(a) Who says this and what does it mean?

Answer: The poet’s friend said this. It means that the poet has painted the tigers in crimson and white, cook and a camel in blue and panther in purple which were vibrant colours where the poet and his friend were giving wings to their imagination.

(b) What does the speaker now ask the painter to paint?

Answer: The speaker then asked the painter to paint a country where nobody goes with new colours and put some people like poet there.

Question 5: What is strange about the colours that have been used in this poem to paint the various animals?

Answer: The painter has painted colourful things of various variety with the most improbable colours such as purple and white tiger, a blue camel and a purple panther.

Question 6: The painter is asked to paint ‘people like you’. What kind of a person do you think the painter is?

Answer: The painter is an innocent child who is absolutely free from any type of pride and prejudice. He has the unique power to create a new world unrestricted by the limitations of the real world.
