Question 1: Define the following:

(a) Matter

Answer: Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It can exist in three different physical states namely – solid, liquid and gas.

(b) Sublimation

Answer: The process of conversion of a solid to a gas without going through the liquid state is known as sublimation. For example – Napthelene balls and camphor.

(c) Water Cycle

Answer: Water Cycle is the circulation of water through the atmosphere.

(d) Melting

Answer: It is a physical process that results in the transition of a substance from solid to liquid.

(e) Condensation

Answer: It is the process by which water vapour in the air is changed into liquid water droplets on coming in contact with a cooler surface.

(f) Evaporation

Answer: It is the process in which liquid changes into gas.

(g) Freezing

Answer: It is the process in which liquid changes into solid.

(h) Precipitation

Answer: It is any form of liquid or solid water particles that fall from the atmosphere and reach the surface of the Earth. Precipitation can fall as rain, snow, hail and sometimes even as sleet.

Question 2: Write the properties of solid, liquid and gas.

Answer:

Properties of solid:

i. The molecules of a solid are closely packed.
ii. The molecules are arranged regularly and systematically.
iii. Solids are incompressible.
iv. Molecules of some solids are arranged in a definite pattern such as crystal like structure in sugar.

Properties of liquid:

i. The molecules of liquids are loosely packed.
ii. The molecules are not arranged regularly and systematically.
iii. Liquids are incompressible.
iv. Molecules have more intermolecular space than solids.

Properties of gas:

i. The molecules of gases are very loosely packed.
ii. The molecules of gases are not regularly and systematically arranged.
iii. Gases are compressible.
iv. There is very large intermolecular space between the molecules of gases.

Question 3: Why are liquids converted into solids on cooling?

Answer: On cooling, the intermolecular space decreases and the molecules become closely packed and get converted into solid.

Question 4: Write two points of difference between:

(a) Condensation and Evaporation

Question 5: What is morning dew and how is it formed?

Answer: Morning dew is water in the form of droplets that appear on thin, exposed objects in the morning. It is formed due to condensation of water vapour in the air.

(a) Sugar and snowflakes form crystal-like structures.

Answer: Sugar and snowflakes form crystal-like structures because their molecules are arranged in a definite pattern.

(b) Gases spread more easily than liquids.

Answer: Gases spread more easily than liquids because the molecules of the gas are very loosely packed.

(c) Sponge is solid but compressible.

Answer: A sponge is solid but it is compressible because it has tiny holes in which air is trapped. When we compress a block of sponge, the air is expelled out and we are able to compress it.

(d) Water is called as Universal solvent.

Answer: Water is a liquid which dissolves a variety of other substances in itself than any other liquid. Due to this, water is known as the universal solvent.

Question 7: Why do melted ice-creams solidify when kept in the freezer?

Answer: Inside the freezer, the temperature is very low. This slows down the movement of the molecules of the ice-cream and the intermolecular space between them decreases. Hence, the melted ice-cream solidifies when kept in the freezer.

Question 8: Can matter be created?

Answer: The universe’s total mass and energy is constant and fully interchangeable. So in a way, the total amount of energy in a closed system cannot be created or destroyed although it can be modified from one form to another.

Question 9: Anita is spending his vacation on a hill station. Each day, early in the morning, she sees droplets of water on the windowpane outside his room. She wonders why water droplets are seen on the windowpane at the hill station but not at his home in Mumbai. Can you solve her understand this phenomenon?

Answer: It is cold at the hill station, the water vapour present in the air condenses early morning on the window panes.

Question 10: What is water cycle? Explain its importance.

Answer: Water circulates through the atmosphere by way of evaporation, condensation, precipitation and the transpiration of plants and animals. This circulation of water through the atmosphere is called the water cycle or hydrological cycle. The water cycle is thus the conversion of water into its three different states. It is a continuous process.

The water cycle is a very important process because it ensures the availability of water for all living organisms on our planet.
