Question 1: Where did Bharatanatyam originate?

Answer: Bharatanatyam originated in the temples of Tamil Nadu in South India.

Question 2: Describe the costume of a Bharatanatyam dancer?

Answer: A Bharatanatyam dancer wears a brightly-coloured sari with a special pleated cloth stitched in such a way that it opens like a hand fan when the dancer flexes her knees and engages in elaborate footwork.

Question 3: In what ways are Odissi and Bharatanatyam similar to each other?

Answer: Odissi and Bharatanatyam are similar to each other as they both have originated from temples. Their costumes are also similar as they have pleated front to allow flexibility during the movement.

Question 4: Briefly describe how temple sculptures and Sanskrit literature influence Odissi dance?

Answer: Odissi dance is evolved from the temple dances in East India and most of the dance poses reflect the depictions in the sculptures of temples in Odisha. The theme of the dance is usually a mythical story, a spiritual message or a devotional poem and the costumes, abhinaya (expressions) and mudras (gestures) are based on the descriptions given in ancient Sanskrit literature.

Answer: Manipuri dance is influenced by Sanskrit text, Natya Shastra and also by local folk dance forms.

Question 6: Describe the attire of the male and female Maniputi dancers.

Answer: The female Manipuri dancers wear a Kumli which is a stiff, barrel-shaped long skirt. It is decorated with gold and silver embroidery with mirrorwork and has lotus motifs on the border. The male dancers wear the dhoti which is bright coloured and is pleated to allow maximum leg movement since the male dancers have swift feet movement.
