Answer: A ‘work-a-day world’ is different from storybooks, as the former is an ordinary day without anything special about it, while storybooks are all about special events and excitement. Also, in storybooks anything can happen and things that are wished for often come true.

(b) How does this statement come true in the text?

Answer: This statement comes true in this text as the day turned out to be very special and beyond the March family’s expectations as Mr March came home from the war.

(c) Explain this line in your own words.

Answer: This line means that sometimes even ordinary days in the real world can be as happy and exciting as a day in the unreal world of storybooks. This thought is very comforting and reassuring for it allows us to hope for good things to happen to us and our dear ones.

Question 7: What gifts did March sisters receive for Christmas? What was their reaction?

Answer: Jo received a storybook that she had always wanted and she hugged it tightly, as she could not wait to start reading it in peace in the attic. Amy received a framed picture from her mother and she loved looking at it. Meg had got a beautiful silk dress, one of her first, which Mr Lawrence had given to her for Christmas and she happily smoothed its soft folds. Beth was happy to have received a bright red shawl from her mother and simply smiled with contentment.

Answer: The special gift that the family received was the pleasant surprise of Mr March coming home on Christmas Day. The family was very happy to see Mr March. Everyone rushed to hug him and he was engulfed in the embrace of four pairs of loving arms. Jo almost fainted with joy and clung to Laurie for support. Mr Brooke kissed Meg in all the hugging and kissing, and Amy tripped over a stool and did not even bother to get up. She hugged her father’s legs and wept for joy. As Mrs March warned everyone to keep quiet because Beth was resting, Beth came out of the study. Joy had given strength to her and she almost flew into her father’s arms.

Answer: Mr March acknowledged that the family had been through a lot of trouble in the past year, and his daughters had done very well in those trying circumstances and been a great support to their mother. He thanked each one of them, as he looked at them with fatherly satisfaction. Mrs March’s heart was also full of joy and gratitude but she did not feel the need to say anything at all.

Answer:

  • Mr March: affectionate and loving towards his family. He ensured that he could celebrate Christmas with his family, also thanked his daughters for their support.
  • Mrs March: strong and caring. Mrs March is strong for she was able to tide through the difficult times; we know she is caring for she gave thoughtful gifts to her daughters and was filled with gratitude that Beth was recovering.
  • Meg: contented and optimistic. Meg was happy with how the year was ending in spite of it having been a difficult year. She was simple and contented with her Christmas gift.
  • Jo: lively and responsible. She had built a snow-maiden along with Laurie to surprise everyone; she took Beth to the study for her to take rest.
  • Beth: talented and delicate. She could sing very well but was very weak.
  • Amy: artistic and mature. She loved the frame her mother had given her. In spite of being the youngest, she could sum up the year in a mature way.

Answer: lt had been a bad year for the March family as they had to cope with many troubles. They were now much happier and in a far better place than they had been earlier that year. Jo remembered that the previous year they had had a sad Christmas without their father. We also get to know that Beth had been very unwell earlier that year. Mr March also said that the family had been through a lot of trouble in the past year and acknowledged that the children had done very well. But the year had ended well as Mr March had come back to his family and Beth was slowly recovering from her illness.
