The family often moved to different cities when Dhyan Chand’s father was transferred several times. As a result, he could attend school for only six years. Eventually, the family settled in Jhansi. Dhyan joined the Indian Army at the age of sixteen.

India’s highest award for lifetime achievement in sports is the Dhyan Chand Award which started in 2002 The National Stadium, Delhi was renamed Dhyan Chand National Stadium in 2002 in his honour. Statues were built in Jhansi and Vienna. He was also conferred with the ‘Gem of India’ award in 2012 posthumously.
