Answer: Raja Ravi Varma, the self-made artist, belonged to an aristocrat family of Travancore in Kerala. Although his family believed painting to be below their status, Varma followed his own calling from the start. He did not receive any formal training in painting, but that did not stop from observing the play of light and shadow in nature or from watching his own uncle, a famous artist at work, to learn what he could. Varma also constantly worked on different pieces of art to try and master his skills. He drew on walls and sketched constantly. Over the years, he learnt a lot from interactions with other artists of the time. He became famous as one of the earliest naturalist painters of India and also excelled at drawing portraits. He worked with is brother on different commissioned paintings, travelling to different princely states. However, the travels took a huge toll on his health and he passed away in 1906.
