Question 1: Read and answer the questions:

All these have never yet been seen.
But scientists, who ought to know,
Assure us that they must be so….

(a) What has never been seen?

Answer: Microbes have never been seen.

(b) What do scientists assure us?

Answer: Scientists assure us that a microbe has one hundred rows of teeth and joined tongue beneath them; that it has seven tufted tails with many pretty pink and purple spots, with a pattern of forty separate bands on each of them; that its eyebrows are light green.

Question 2: Read and answer the questions:

Oh! Let us never, never doubt
What nobody is sure about!

(a) What is nobody sure of – that microbes exist or that they look as described in the poem?

Answer: Nobody is sure of that microbes look as described in the poem.

(b) What should we never doubt?

Answer: We should never doubt that microbes look as described in the poem.

Question 3: Why should we believe the scientists even though we cannot see the microbe?

Answer: We should believe the scientists because scientists are supposed to be more knowledgeable and they have seen the microbes through the microscope and assured us that they look like the way it is described.

Question 4: Does the poet believe the scientists? Does he think that a microbe looks as described in the poem? Why do you think so? Quote lines from the poem.

Answer: Yes, the poet believes the scientists. He thinks that a microbe looks as described in the poem. In the poem, it is indicated that scientists have seen the microbe through the microscope and they have assured us that the microbe look as described by the poet. The lines which support our view are:
“But Scientists, who ought to know,
Assure us that they must be so….”
