Question 1: Why didn’t Mowgli stop at the nearest village?

Answer: Mowgli did not stop at the nearest village as it was very close to the jungle and Sher Khan, his enemy, would come searching for him to kill him.

Question 2: What did Mowgli do as a man came out of the hut?

Answer: Mowgli stood up, opened its mouth and pointed down it to show that he wanted food.

Question 3: Write in brief about the priest’s appearance.

Answer: The priest was a big, fat man dressed in white, with a red and yellow mark on his forehead.

Question 4: What news did Gray Brother give to Mowgli regarding Sher Khan?

Answer: Gray Brother told Mowgli that Sher Khan had gone away to hunt far off till his coat grows again, for he was badly burnt. But when he would return, he sweared that he would kill Mowgli.

Question 5: What new habits and work did Mowgli learn in the first month of his stay with the humans? What did he feel about those habits?

Answer: Mowgli learnt the ways and customs of human beings. He wore a cloth around him, learnt about money and ploughing. These habits he did not understand and found them annoying and useless.

Answer: The priest says this to Messua.

(b) What had the jungle taken away and how has it been restored?

Answer: Messua’s son had been taken by the tiger and now he has come back as Mowgli.

(c) Was the speaker’s command heeded? If yes, how?

Answer: Yes, the speaker’s command was heeded. Messua took Mowgli to her hut.

(a) Who says this to whom?

Answer: Gray Brother says this to Mowgli.

(b) Whom does the pack cast out and why?

Answer: The pack casts out Mowgli because a lot of loss and destruction was caused in the jungle due to the fire.

(c) How does the speaker opine about humans and their talks?

Answer: The speaker, Gray Brother opines the humans and their talks as the talk of frogs in a pond meaning that they don’t know anything about the jungle.

Question 7: How would have Mowgli felt when he left the pack of wolves to join the humans?

Answer: Mowgli would have felt sad when he left the pack of wolves and also excited and anxious to join the humans.

Question 8: Discuss the irony used in the story to describe human vices through the eyes of Mowgli and Gray Brother.

Answer: Mowgli finds humans as having no manners and compares them to the gray apes. Gray Brother compares human beings to frogs in a pond who may know nothing about the world around them.

Question 9: What must be going on in Messua’s mind as she sees Mowgli? What do you think had happened to Nathoo?

Answer: Messua must have felt happy to see Mowgli. She was reminded of her son when she saw Mowgli. The tiger had taken away Nathoo and probably killed him.
