Question 1: Answer the following in one word:

(a) What was the name of the capital of Magadh?

Answer: Pataliputra.

(b) What do we call Pataliputra nowadays?

Answer: Patna.

(c) Who was Dhanananda?

Answer: The king of ‘Magadha’.

Question 2: What is the difference between wisdom and discretion?

Answer: Wisdom means intelligence and discretion is the power to decide what needs be done in a particular situation.

Question 3: Describe a special feature of Nanda Kings?

Answer: A special feature of Nanda Kings is that they had established a vast empire by conquering far-off kingdoms.

Question 4: What kind of lion was there in the court of Dhanananda?

Answer: In the court of Dhanananda, there was a lion made of wax.

Question 5: Why did his mother send Chandragupta to the hunters?

Answer: Chandragupta’s mother sent him to the hunters because with her meagre salary, she could only support herself and did not want her son to starve. She thought that by sending Chandragupta to the hunters, he would get food to his content.

Also, she thought that by living with the hunters, he would learn the tricks of hunting and would become a good hunter while growing young. Then, she would take him to the king who would give him a good job and her old age would pass happily.

Question 6: Describe the special feature of the kingdom of the Nanda Kings.

Answer: The Nanda Kings ruled Magadha. They had established a vast empire by conquering far off kingdoms. They had an army of brave men. The government treasury was filled with wealth and they lacked nothing. So, the rulers of near and distant kingdoms acknowledged their supremacy.

Question 7: How did Chandragupta take the lion out of the cage?

Answer: On observing the lion minutely, Chandragupta came to know that the lion was made of wax. So, he asked for two burning torches and stuck both the flames to the body of the lion. The lion’s body started to melt and within minutes it flowed out and the cage became empty.

Answer: The hunters lead a very difficult life. Their whole life passes in running after wild animals and facing them. Sometimes they embrace death when some fierce animals attack them. They need to learn how to chase animals and hunt them. The hunters also need to learn about the nature of wild animals, their behaviour and their marks.
