Question 1: What are some of the things that maps bring to the speaker’s mind?

Answer: Maps remind the speaker of ships, strange bazars, floating chunks of ice, breezy lands etc.

Question 2: How are ‘high adventure and bright dream’ related to maps?

Answer: Maps are storehouse of knowledge. They may look like small pieces of paper but contain a lot of information for people who dream of scaling the mountains or exploring the world. They help us to dream happily of unknown places and unseen things. They make us feel fascinated about every place we can travel to and discover. That is how they are related to high adventure and bright dreams.

Question 3: What are the different kinds of maps that the speaker mentions?

Answer: Train maps, maps of wind, weather, roads etc. are the different types of maps which the speaker mentions in the poem.

(a) Why have maps been called magic wands?

Answer: Maps are magic wands as they can transport you to any place of your choice instantly.

(b) How can someone be home-staying and vagabond at the same time?

Answer: Vagabond is a person who moves from one place to another without any purpose. Hence, a person sitting at home can transport himself to any kind of land by reading about and imagining whenever he wishes and come back. In this process, maps can definitely be of great help.

Answer: The poet fires the reader’s imagination by making them visualize Ships navigating to unknown lands following the direction given by the guiding stars. Markets are described as strange meaning that they are so far not known to anyone. He mentions that there are sheets of ice floating all around. The planes are also airborne to new destinations. The reader can visualize all these images mentioned by the poet.

Question 7: Think of another thing that looks simple and humble on the surface, but which can be powerful and exciting. What is it?

Answer: A book or a painting may look simple and humble on the surface, but it can fire our imagination by talking about or showing us strange, wonderful or even imaginary places.
