Question 7: How can you say that when Robinson returned home, he was very frightened?

Answer: When Robinson returned home, he was very frightened. Every now and then he would look behind and would mistake every bush or tree to be a man. As he saw the cave, he quickly ran inside for cover like a frightened animal. He ran inside the cave as if he was being chased by someone. He was so consumed by the fear that he was not aware of his own actions. He did not remember whether he used the ladder or hole in the rock to enter the cave.

Question 8: Do you think Robinson’s fear was baseless? Discuss.

Answer: Yes, I think that his fear was baseless. The sight of a footprint made him extremely fearful and so he started imagining things which might not have been true. The footprint could have been of a man who might not have any intention to hurt him. But Robinson had been stranded alone in the island for too long which had led to increased fear and misconceptions.

Question 9: Why does Robinson’s fear return in his second trip to see the footprint?

Answer: Robinson hid in the cave for a while. But when nothing happened, he became bold and thought of investigating about the footprint. He thought of measuring the footprint with his own footmark. Robinson found that the footprint was much larger than his own footmark. Also, the footprint was in that part of the beach which he had not visited for quite some time. This made him even more fearful as he was now sure that there was someone else on the island other than him.

Question 10: Who do you think the footprint could belong to?

Answer: In my view, the footprint could have belonged to some other person like Robinson. The person might have wandered off in the sea and finally found himself stranded on the island or it could have belonged to one of the inhabitants of the island. In fact, Robinson also felt that the island was inhabited.

Question 11: Do you think the person whose footprint it was, had come by boat or was he/ she already living there? Give reasons for your choice.

Answer: I think the person whose footprint it was, was already living on the island. When Robinson found the footprint, he looked everywhere for further signs of the footprint. He even went near the shore but he saw no sign of it. Robinson also did not see any wrecked boat on the seashore. Had the person come from the sea there should have been a boat or more footprints near the seashore.

Question 12: Read the sentence and answer the questions:

‘In doing so, I was much comforted and began going out to investigate.’

(a) Who is the speaker?

Answer: Robinson Crusoe is the speaker.

(b) What had he just done which gave him comfort?

Answer: Robinson remained fearful for many days after seeing the footprint so, he prayed for protection. This gave him a lot of comfort.

(c) What did the speaker want to investigate?

Answer: The speaker wanted to investigate the footprint which he saw on the sand in the beach. He wanted to find out whose footprint it was.

(d) Was the speaker successful?

Answer: The speaker could not actually find out whose footprint it was. But after the investigation, he was sure that it did not belong to him. He was also sure that there was someone else other than him on the island. The footprint could be of one of the savages of the mainland who wandered out to the sea or it could be possible that the island was inhabited.
