The Bear Story Questions & Answers

Question 1: Where did the lady find the bear cub? How did she bring it up?

Answer: The lady who lived in an old manor-house on the border of a big forest found the bear cub in the forest, half dead of hunger. The cub was so small and helpless that it had to be fed on the bottle milk by the lady and her old cook.

Question 2: The bear grew up but “he was a most amiable bear”. Give three examples to prove this.

Answer: The three examples to prove that he was the most amiable bear are:

  • He would sit outside his kennel and would amicably see the cattle grazing in the nearby fields.
  • The children used to ride on his back and also enjoy sleep occasionally along with the bear in his kennel.
  • The three dogs loved to play all sorts of games with him, pull his ears and his stump of a tail and tease him in a friendly manner.

Question 3: What did the bear eat? There were two things he was not allowed to do. What were they?

Answer: The bear ate the same food as the dogs – bread, porridge, potato, cabbage, turnip. The bear liked fruits and specifically the apples. He was not allowed to pluck apples from the tree and harm the beehives on the tree.

Question 4: When was the bear tied up with a chain? Why?

Answer: The bear was tied with a chain during the night and on Sundays when his mistress went to spend the afternoon with her sister who lived on the other side of the mountain-lake.

Question 5: What happened one Sunday when the lady was going to her sister’s house? What did the lady do? What was the bear’s reaction?

Answer: One Sunday when the lady had chained the bear as usual and was on half-way through the forest to meet her sister, she suddenly heard the cracking of a tree-branch on the footpath behind her and was horrified to see the bear coming towards her in full speed. The lady got annoyed when she saw the bear disobeyed her, followed her to the forest and even lost his new collar. She shouted at her to back at once and in a fit of rage hit him on the nose with her parasol (umbrella). The bear turned around and began to walk back.

Question 6: Why was the bear looking sorry for himself in the evening? Why did the cook get angry with her mistress?

Answer: The bear was looking sorry for himself as he did not like being chained and confined to one place. The cook got angry with her mistress as when the mistress came back, she started scolding the bear for disobeying and following her in the forest. However, the cook told the mistress that the bear did not leave the place and was obediently sitting here the whole day, eagerly waiting for the mistress to come back.

Question 7: Most people keep dogs and cats as pets. Can you think of some unusual pets that people keep?

Answer: Some unusual pets that people keep are pythons, leopards, lions.

Question 8: The second bear did not attack the lady because he was afraid of her. Do you agree?

Answer: Yes, I do agree that the second bear did not attack the lady because he was afraid of her. Usually, people get scared when they see animals like bear, however, the lady showed no such sign instead scolded him back and even hit him with her umbrella. The bear must have taken aback to see the confidence of the lady. This must have frightened the bear.
