Answer: ‘I’ in the poem is the earthen goblet. The speaker in the first stanza is the poet.
Question 2: What does the phrase ‘fragrant friendship’ convey about the goblet’s relationship with the flower?
Answer: The phrase ‘fragrant friendship’ conveys the warm and cordial relationship of goblet with the flower. The goblet says that before it was given its shape, it was in the form of natural clay. The plant bearing flower dug its roots deep into clay and the clay got attracted to the scent of the flower and they both became friends.
Question 3: The poem has the expression ‘burned so warm’. Does the poet have tender feelings towards the goblet or the earth? What is your opinion?
Answer: The poet has tender feelings towards the earth because when the potter gives the earth any shape, it has to be burnt warm. It seems like death to the clay. The clay wants to escape from the hands of the potter. We know about the feelings of the poet from the expression – “conscious impulse in my clay to break away from the great potter’s hand.”
I believe that the earth is happy in its natural form and when it becomes a goblet, its happiness is lost.

Answer: The goblet likes its past life which was full of life in its natural form. It had a natural, fragrant relationship with a flower whose roots were deeply buried in its heart.
On the other hand, the goblet feels that its present form is death to it.
Question 5: What common things do you notice between the expression ‘living breath’ of me and ‘natural stage’?
Answer: The common things that we notice between the expression ‘living breath’ and ‘natural stage’ are ‘freedom’, ‘happiness’ and ‘life’. The earth is quite happy in its natural form when it had a fragrant relationship with flower.
