Answer: The poet says that the squirrel wore a question mark for tail because the tail was bent in such a manner that it resembled a question mark. The squirrel has a long, fluffy and bushy tail. The texture of the fur of the tail is smooth and silky.
Question 2: Why do we say an animal ‘wears’ a coat?
Answer: We say that an animal ‘wears’ a coat because the fur or hair that covers his body looks like a coat. It gives the impression that the animal is actually wearing a coat.
Question 3: Why does the poet mean by, ‘An overcoat of gray,’?
Answer: An overcoat of gray means the gray fur or hair of the squirrel that is all over his body.
Question 4: Give one word to describe the posture of the squirrel.
Answer: The posture of the squirrel is upright. It is sitting straight and eating nuts.
Question 5: Who is ‘teasing’ whom in the poem?
Answer: The squirrel is teasing the poet and her friends in the poem.

Answer: The squirrel was neither shy nor frightened. He seemed to be naughty and playful as he liked to tease and play with the poet and his friends. If the poet and his friends ran around its tree, the squirrel ran the other way, not because he was afraid but he was just trying to be playful and friendly with them.
Question 7: Write your views about the poet’s choice of the subject for the poem, ‘The Squirrel’.
Answer: The poet seems to love nature and all the creatures living in it. Therefore, he finds it fascinating to observe nature around him and describes its beauty and splendour. He marvels at the mere sight of an ordinary squirrel and goes on to write a poem on it. In a simple manner, he describes the squirrel that he finds in his garden. He derives immense pleasure by just watching the little acts of the squirrel. This shows that the poet is simple at heart who looks for joy and happiness even in small and ordinary things. So, I believe that his choice of subject is appropriate as he tries to bring home the message that one seeks true happiness and joy not just from extraordinary things. Even small and ordinary things or creatures like a squirrel in our garden can be a source of our joy and delight.
