Question 5: Give reasons:

(a) All creatures must reproduce.

Answer: All creatures are born, age and finally die. Therefore, to preserve their species, they must reproduce.

(b) Reptile eggs have leathery shells.

Answer: Reptiles such as snakes, turtles, crocodiles lay eggs in holes in the ground. The shells of reptile eggs are leathery and elastic so that they do not break when they are laid on the ground.

Answer: Mammals look after their young ones by keeping them clean, warm and protecting them from enemies, climatic changes and other hazards.

Question 7: What is gestation period?

Answer: The fixed period for which the young ones of mammals develop inside the mother’s body (womb) is called the gestation period.

Question 8: What are spawns?

Answer: The mass of eggs released by frogs/fish are known as spawns.

Question 9: You must have read that a fish lays thousands of eggs at a time. There are millions of fishes in the sea. Why are the sea or ocean is not flooded with fish? How the population of fishes maintained in the nature?

Answer: A fish lays thousands of eggs at a time in the water but only a few hundred of the eggs develop into tiny baby fish because most eggs are eaten by bigger fish and other predators.
