Answer: ‘Me’ imagines herself to be a mermaid (the mythical creature with the head and body of a woman and the tail of a fish) as she wants to live a life of isolation where there would be no one to restrict her movements.

(c) What sort of life does ‘me’ imagine for herself as a mermaid?

Answer: As a mermaid, Amanda imagines a very peaceful life where she would be surrounded by a calm sea with emerald green water and she would glide gleefully in this placid sea.

(d) Explain the expression: “languid, emerald sea”?

Answer: “Languid, emerald sea” refers to a calm sea with emerald green water that forms a peaceful atmosphere where Amanda need not to suffer from the constant chiding by her mother.

(e) Why is the stanza put in brackets?

Answer: The stanza is put in brackets because these are the thoughts of Amanda which are to be distinguished from the words of the other speaker.

Answer: So much frustrated by the constant chiding of her mother, Amanda imagines herself to be an orphan. She feels that life would be enjoyable if she were an orphan with no parent around to curb her freedom.

(c) What would ‘I’ do as an orphan?

Answer: As an orphan, Amanda would roam about bare-footed in the streets freely with no parent to scold her for walking in the dusty path.

(d) Why is the silence ‘golden’ and freedom ‘sweet’ for the speaker?

Answer: With the constant dominating commands of her mother, Amanda feels fed up and suffocated because she has no freedom to exercise her own sweet will. That is why she craves for liberty and regards silence to be ‘golden’ and freedom to be ‘sweet’.

Answer: ‘I’ wishes to be Rapunzel who was locked up by a witch in a tower. She feels that her isolation in the tower would relieve her from the constant chiding of her mother.

Answer: ‘I’ plans never to let down her bright hair because she would never like to leave the life of peace, bliss and isolation. Rapunzel’s bright hair helped the prince in climbing up the tower to rescue her from the clutches of the witch and so, Amanda would not let her hair down.

Answer: ‘I’ imagines to live a care-free, peaceful and blissful life in the tower as there would be no one to check her and curb her freedom.
