Question 1: How old do you think Amanda is? How do you know this?

Answer: According to me, Amanda is a school-going girl as her mother tells her to finish her homework. It seems that she is in her early teens as she has the childish habit of biting nails but is old enough to have acne.

Question 2: Who do you think is speaking to her?

Answer: According to me, most probably her mother is speaking to her who wants her daughter to develop into a well brought-up girl. She instructs and commands her and rebuke her for what she finds to be wrong in her.

Question 3: Why are stanzas 2, 4 and 6 given in parenthesis?

Answer: The stanzas 2, 4 and 6 are given in parenthesis as they represent the child’s thoughts and imagination. These are not expressed vocally and so, should be distinguished from the mother’s words.

Question 4: Who is the speaker in Stanzas 2, 4 and 6? Do you think this speaker is listening to the speaker in Stanzas 1, 3, 5, and 7?

Answer: In Stanzas 2, 4 and 6, Amanda is the speaker and she is intentionally turning a deaf ear to what her mother is saying in Stanzas 1, 3, 5, and 7 because she is fed up of the constant nagging done by her mother and tries to find escape by indulging in wishful dreams.

Question 5: What could Amanda do if she were a mermaid?

Answer: As a mermaid, Amanda imagines a very peaceful life where she would be surrounded by a calm sea with emerald green water and she would glide gleefully in this placid sea. She wants to live a life of isolation where there would be no one to restrict her movements.

Question 6: Is Amanda an orphan? Why does she say so?

Answer: No, Amanda is not an orphan as throughout the poem, her mother is talking to her. However, irritated by the constant nagging of her mother, she would prefer being an orphan so that she can live her life according to her own sweet will without being checked by anyone.

Question 7: Do you know the story of Rapunzel? Why does she want to be Rapunzel?

Answer: Rapunzel is a golden-haired girl in a German fairytale who was locked up by a witch in a tower with no doors and a single window. With the help of Rapunzel’s long golden hair that she used to let down out of the window, the witch herself used to climb up and down the tower. One day, a prince climbed up her long hair into the tower and rescued the girl from the clutches of the witch and married her.

Amanda wishes to be Rapunzel because she feels that her isolation in the tower would relieve her from the constant chiding of her mother.

Question 8: What does the girl yearn for? What does this poem tell you about Amanda?

Answer: The girl years for a life of freedom and peace. This poem tells us that Amanda is fed up by the constant rebukes and nagging of his mother and so, she turns defiant and doesn’t listen to her mother. She finds out an escape from the world of reality to the world of imagination.

Question 9: Read the last stanza. Do you think Amanda is sulking and is moody?

Answer: According to me, Amanda is neither sulking nor moody. Rather her mother thinks so and commands her not to sulk. Due to constant chiding by her mother, she has transported herself into the world of imagination where can live a peaceful life.
