The poem is written by an American poetess Emma Gorrie. The speaker is a school going child who is afraid to go to school due to some fears which she expresses with her mom. She is worried that scientists in the name of change have started cloning the animals and biologists are experimenting with the stem cells. All of this is adding to things we must learn which is a big problem.

Question 1: Who is the speaker of the poem? Can you guess his/her age? Support your answer.

Answer: The speaker of the poem is a school going child who maybe around 11-12 years old. The child says that he/she is not interested in going to school and talks about the new discoveries and inventions that the scientists are coming up with which the children of her age are supposed to learn and causing big trouble to them.

Question 2: What is the speaker’s concern?

Answer: The speaker feels that the biologists, scientists, archaeologists and geologists are bringing a lot of changes and are destroying the world with their actions. The speaker even feels that the teachers are also a part of this plot. His/Her concern is that with these rapid changes, learning has become too much for their age and strength and is a lot of trouble.

Question 3: Which line of the poem shows speaker’s concern?

Answer: The last line of the poem – “Giving us kids too much to learn” shows thespeaker’s concern.

They all are doing so saying that it’s change and are giving children too many things to learn which is giving a lot of trouble to them and is a cause of concern for them.
