Question 1: How did the narrator know that two lions had just passed by?

Answer: The narrator knew that two lions had just passed by as he spotted fresh lion tracks on the dirt road that they were driving on.

Question 2: Why did the narrator move away from the vehicle?

Answer: The narrator moved away from the vehicle to ensure that the lions were not in the thick bush on his left. As the narrator looked out for the lions, he didn’t realise how far he was moving from the vehicle.

Question 3: What made the narrator realise that he had been stupid?

Answer: The narrator realised how stupid he had been when he held out his hands in opposite direction. As he pointed to the cubs in the bush to his left and pointed to the adult lions near the termite mound in the opposite direction. He realised that he stood between the cubs and the adults, which is very dangerous.

Answer: The narrator felt ‘nak*d and cold’ as he was filled with fear. He had unwittingly wandered in between a lion and its cubs, which was a very dangerous thing to do as the lions would attack him thinking that he could harm the cubs.

Answer: The roar that the narrator gave is described as being ‘less than threatening’ probably because it was not loud enough, given that he was so frightened, and hence was no match to the roars of lions.

Answer: On seeing the ‘fresh lion tracks’, the narrator stepped out of the vehicle to take a better look at the tracks on the dirt road and see which way they had gone.

c. Who did the ‘tracks’ belong to?

Answer: The tracks belonged to Martina’s pride that comprised of two female lions.

2. While I should realised how stupid I was, the lions came at me.

a. How had the narrator acted stupidly?

Answer: The narrator kept on moving towards the tracks, without thinking about how far he was going from the vehicle.

b. Why did the lions go towards him?

Answer: The lions went towards him because they sensed some danger with the presence of the narrator and his group.

c. What did the narrator do to make the lions hesitate?

Answer: The narrator managed to roar with menace in it and the lions hesitated and ran away.
