Answer: Rani Lakshmi Bai said these words.

(b) Who is the speaker referring to? How did they meet?

Answer: The speaker is referring to Jhalakari. When Jhalakari grew up, she got married to a soldier in the army of Rani Lakshmibai and went to live with him in Jhansi. That was how Rani chanced to see her one day.

(c) Why did the speaker say this? What did they do together?

Answer: Rani Lakshmi Bai said these words as she liked Jhalakari’s frank and fearless manner. Rani Lakshmibai and Jhalakari became good friends. Every day, they would go riding together. They also fenced, wrestled and practised shooting with revolvers and guns.

Answer: When Dulaji Thakur said that the captive was not Rani Lakshmibai, the British commander was furious that they had been tricked. He realized that if Jhalakari was allowed to go free, she would be dangerous, so he sentenced her to death by hanging.

Question 3: What happened when the British first attacked Jhansi in 1858?

Answer: When the British attacked the fort at Jhansi in March 1858, they bombarded it with their heavy guns. The Rani’s troops, however, fought back bravely. Among them was Jhalakari, who never left her beloved queen, as she rode from one point to another, firing at the British soldiers with a steady hand and a sure aim. Soon, the British, who had not expected such a strong defense of the fort, had to telegraph for more troops.

Question 4: Who was Dulaji Thakur? Why did the British have to take his help?

Answer: Dulaji Thakur belonged to Rani Lakshmibai’s army. He was in charge of the South gate of the fort. Though the British fought hard, they were unable to gain entry into Jhansi Fort. FinaIIy,in return for a large sum of money, DuIaji led them to a spot where there was a break in the wall and the British soldiers were able to enter the fort through it, at the dead of night.

Answer: The British commander was furious that they had captured Jhalakari in place of Rani Lakshmibai. He realized that they had been tricked by Jhalakari as she had deliberately dressed like Rani Lakshmibai and was also riding the Rani’s horse. He realized that this had given the Rani the time to escape.

Answer: ReaIising that Jhalakari had tricked them and being aware of how brave she was, as she allowed herself to be captured by the British, the British commander thought that it would be dangerous to let her go. So, he sentenced her to death.

Jhalakari was unfazed. She declared that she was not afraid of dying. As they led her to her death, she was filled with patriotism. She warned the British that they would never be able to conquer the people of Jhansi or India and they would rise time and again and fight the British, until India was free.
