Question 1: Define the following:

(a) Stomata

Answer: Stomata are tiny pores present below the surface of leaves. Its main function is exchange of gases and removal of extra water from the plant.

(b) Germination

Answer: It is the process by which a seed starts growing or developing into a new plant.

(c) Starch

Answer: A white, tasteless, solid carbohydrate, that is the form of stored energy in plants.

(d) Pigment

Answer: A substance occurring in plant or animal tissue and producing a characteristic colour. For example – chlorophyll in green plants.

(e) Glucose

Answer: A simple sugar, that is a product of photosynthesis and is the principal source of energy for all living organisms. It is obtained from starch.

(f) Heterotrophic nutrition

Answer: The mode of nutrition in which organisms depend on other organisms for food is called heterotrophic nutrition.

Question 2: What is photosynthesis?

Answer: Photo is the Greek word for ‘light’ and ‘synthesis’, is the Greek word for ‘putting together’. Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants prepare their own food (glucose) using raw materials like carbon dioxide and water, in the presence of sunlight, with the help of chlorophyll.

Question 3: Compare the functions of leaves and roots of a plant?

Answer: Leaves make food for the plant, whereas roots provide water and minerals to the plant.

Question 4: Leaves of the plants appear green in colour. Give reason.

Answer: Leaves of a plant contain chlorophyll – a green pigment, due to which they appear green in colour. Chlorophyll also helps to absorb the sunlight needed for photosynthesis.

Question 5: Why does photosynthesis mostly take place in the leaves?

Answer: Photosynthesis generally takes place in the leaves. This is because leaves:

  • Contain chlorophyll for capturing sunlight
  • Generally, have a thin, wide and flat surface for absorption of adequate amount of light and carbon dioxide
  • Have stomata for exchange of gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide
  • Have an extensive network of vascular tissues that help in transport of materials to and from the leaves.

Question 6: What are the end products of photosynthesis?

Answer: Glucose and oxygen are the main end products of the photosynthesis.

Question 7: What happens to the extra food which was not used by the plant?

Answer: The extra food is stored by the plant in the form of starch in different parts of the plant such as roots, stems, leaves, fruits and flower.

Question 8: Plants are known as the largest producers. Give reason.

Answer: Producers are the organisms that prepare their own food. People & animals are called consumers as their bodies don’t make their own food while plants prepare their food by the process of photosynthesis. So, we call plants the largest ‘producers’.

Question 9: What will happen to the rate of photosynthesis for the following factors?

(a) If there is less sunlight.

Answer: The rate of photosynthesis will decrease.

(b) If it is a bright sunny day.

Answer: The rate of photosynthesis will increase.

(c) If the soil is dry.

Answer: The rate of photosynthesis will decrease.

(d) If the concentration of carbon dioxide is more in the air.

Answer: The rate of photosynthesis will increase.

Question 10: Give reasons:

(a) We should not go near the plants at night.

Answer: We should not go near plants at night because at night they are engaged in the respiration process, which combines oxygen and the food made during photosynthesis to produce usable energy and thus, release carbon dioxide which is harmful for human beings.

(b) Iodine solution is used to determine the presence of starch.

Answer: Iodine solution changes into blue-black colour in the presence of starch. Hence, it is used to determine the presence of starch.

Question 11: Rahul took the leaf of a plant and placed it under a thin white sheet of paper. He then ribbed on the paper with a pencil held sideways.

(a) What will he observe on the paper?

Answer: The impressions of the leaf with margins, veins and the leaf blade will be observed on the sheet of paper.

(b) He then took leaves of different plants and continued the tracing process. What can he conclude from the patterns on the paper?

Answer: He concludes that each leaf is unique and different leaves have different shapes and sizes.

Question 12: Neha took a potted plant and kept it inside a cupboard. Even though it was watered, the pant died. Why?

Answer: Plants require sunlight for photosynthesis. If it is kept in the cupboard (dark), it will not be able to synthesize its own food hence it dies.

Question 13: A variegated plant has leaves with both green and white parts. Will photosynthesis take place in the white part of the leaves? Justify your answer.

Answer: Photosynthesis will not take place in the white part of the leaf because it lacks chlorophyll which is essential for photosynthesis.
