Answer: The narrator and her family were ‘zipping’ the stalks of celery.
(b) Why were they zipping it?
Answer: The long strings running through the length of the stalk of celery got caught in the teeth of the narrator and the family.
They were zipping it to pull the strings out of the stalk.

Answer: In China, the narrator’s family never ate celery or any other kind of vegetable in its raw form. They always had to disinfect the vegetables in boiling water first.
Question 9: Do you think the narrator and her family enjoyed the dinner at the Gleason’s house? Give reasons for your answer.
Answer: I do not think that the narrator’s family enjoyed the dinner at the Gleason’s house as everything was unfamiliar to them, they were not being able to converse comfortably; they were unaccustomed to the snacks and food they were offered; and the seating arrangement for dinner was new to them. They were embarrassed as American table manners were new to them.
Question 10: How did the narrator feel as she got on to the bus the morning after the dinner? Why does she relax after Meg spoke to her?
Answer: The narrator was feeling embarrassed as she got on to the bus the morning after the dinner because Meg too would be on the bus. The narrator was not sure how Meg would feel about the narrator and her family after the spectacle at dinner the previous night. She wondered if Meg would have formed an opinion about the narrator because they had embarrassed themselves. However, the narrator had nothing to fear because Meg was her usual cheerful self. The only reference Meg made to dinner was to whether the narrator and her family had enough to eat because they did not seem to have served themselves much. When Meg was friendly and appeared to nurse no sour feelings, the narrator relaxed.
Question 11: If you were Meg, what would you have done to make the narrator’s family more comfortable that evening?
Answer: If I were Meg, I would have joined them during dinner, eating along with them so that they could take cues from me. Normally, it is a good way to give cues to follow by eating with guests who may be new to the table etiquette of the particular place.
