Question 1: Read the lines and answer the questions:

1. A habit is a sticky thing;
Much good or evil it can bring;
It binds a victim, holds him fast,

i. Why do you think habits are called ‘sticky’?

Answer: A habit is called sticky because it does not leave one easily.

ii. How can it bring ‘good or evil’?

Answer: One can form either a good habit, like waking up early and keeping one’s body clean, or form a bad habit, like behaving rudely with elders or fighting with one’s friends. Therefore, it can bring good or evil.

iii. What do the words ‘holds him fast’ mean?

Answer: The words ‘holds him fast’ means keeps him in its grip, like a chain.

2. Good habits are a little slow;
They need a lot of care to grow;
If tended well, they grow more fair.

i. Why do you think ‘good habits are a little slow’?

Answer: Good habits are a little slow because they take time to cultivate.

ii. What ‘care’ do you think good habits need in order ‘to grow’?

Answer: In order to make them grow, good habits have to be nurtured with care – just like a plant that needs to be watered regularly.

iii. What do the words ‘grow more fair’ mean?

Answer: The words ‘grow more fair’, here, means that they start looking better.

Question 2: How do good habits help us all through life? Give an example.

Answer: Good habits can make one more productive, ensure that one maintains good health and turn one into a better human being.
For example, a person who makes a habit of getting up early in the morning can be successful in life because he will have more time to perform his tasks. A person who exercises everyday will have a healthy body, and a person who helps the elderly will be respected by all.

Question 3: In the poem, habits are compared to plants. Draw up a comparison of your own to describe habits.

Answer: Habits are infectious. It can be passed on from a friend to the other, or from an elder sibling to the younger one, or from one’s parents.

Question 4: If you had to choose, which one good habit would you like to have/cultivate? Give reason for your choice.

Answer: I want to cultivate the good habit of exercising every day in the morning for an hour to stay healthy and fit.
