Answer: The Duchess meant that she did not want Nino there. This tells us that she was cross. Nino responded calmly by saying ‘You’re right, there’s nothing worse than bad company.’

Answer: The Duchess was unhappy because she missed her friends and her teacher. She reasoned that she had been dragged away from city and had lost everything. Answer: Nino’s arguments were that even Albertino and he, himself, had to give up things they liked, but neither of them were on strike.
