Question 1: Why couldn’t Sophie sleep?

Answer: Sophie couldn’t sleep because a moonbeam was slanting through a gap in the curtains and shining right on her pillow.

Question 2: Describe the moonbeam.

Answer: The moonbeam was like a silver blade slicing through the room from the gap in the curtain by the window. It was directly falling on to Sophie’s face.

Question 3: What was the witching hour?

Answer: The witching hour was a special moment in the middle of the night when every child and every grown-up was in a deep sleep and all the dark things came out from hiding and had the world to themselves.

Question 4: What happened if the children got out of bed after lights out?

Answer: The children were punished if they got out of bed after lights out.

Question 5: Why did Sophie get out of bed?

Answer: Sophie got out of bed to close the gap in the curtains.

Question 6: What did Sophie have to do if she had to look around her?

Answer: Sophie had to wear her glasses having thick lenses and steel rims if she had to look around her.

Question 7: Explain the line – ‘Sophie had never known such a silence’.

Answer: ‘Sophie had never known such a silence’ because she did not see anybody walking on the pavement, there were no cars on the street and not even the tiniest sound could be heard anywhere.

Question 8: Describe the scene as Sophie looked out of the window.

Answer: As Sophie looked out of the window, she saw that the village street looked completely different in the silvery moonlight. The houses looked bent and crooked, like houses in a fairytale. Everything was pale and ghostly and milky white.

Question 9: Describe the sight that made Sophie freeze in fear.

Answer: As Sophie looked out of the window, she saw that there was something coming up the street on the opposite side. It was something tall, black and very thin. He was a giant four times taller than a normal person, was wearing a long, black cloak and was peering into the upstairs window of the houses which made Sophie freeze in fear.

Answer: Sophie is in the dormitory.

Answer: It was a silvery moonlight. Everyone was asleep except Sophie who longed to duck underneath the curtains and lean out of the window to see what the world looked like during the witching hour. So, that is the time when she saw that the houses were completely still.

Answer: Sophie, a young orphaned girl who lies awake in her bed, unable to sleep, she feels uncertain about what could be outside her window. Curious about the world at this dark hour, she peers out her window and that is when she spots ‘The BFG’ the very first time.

Answer: Yes, this rule was applicable at all time.

Answer: She was longing to duck underneath the curtains and watch how the world looked like now that the witching hour was at hand.

(d) How was Sophie sure that there was no one there?

Answer: Sophie was sure that there was no one there because it was witching hour and everyone was asleep. Everything around was pale and ghostly.
