The Bit of Magic Paper Questions & Answers
Question 1: Who was Gobby? What did he find in his garden one day?
Answer: Gobby was a pixie. One day, he found a bit of paper in his garden.
Question 2: What should Gobby have done with the bit of paper? What did he do instead?
Answer: Gobby should have taken it straight back to Witch Heyho, who had written in it. But instead, he was curious to see what was written on the bit of paper and so, he read it all.
Question 3: What did Gobby imagine doing after the black currants would grow? What was the spell actually meant for?
Answer: Gobby imagined himself having black currant pie everyday. The spell actually was meant for growing black beetles.
Question 4: What happened once the black beetles started to grow?
Answer: The black beetles ran down the stalks and spread about the kitchen floor, looking for something to eat.
Question 5: How did Witch Heyho react when Gobby told her about what had happened?
Answer: At first, Witch Heyho looked stern but then when she saw the black beetles coming out of Gobby’s kitchen door into the garden, she began to laugh.

Answer: Gobby did not want to grow ‘them’ in the garden because Witch Heyho would see him.
2. Gobby stared in horror, and saw that what Peterkin had said was right.
(a) What did Gobby stare in horror at?
Answer: Gobby stared in horror at black beetles growing on the sprays.
(b) What was Peterkin right about?
Answer: Peterkin was right when he said that the spell was for black beetles.
(c) What did he ask Peterkin to do after this? How did Peterkin react to Gobby’s request?
Answer: Gobby asked Peterkin to take the sprays into the garden and burn them. But Peterkin did not touch them. Instead, he opened the door and ran home.
(d) What did Gobby do after Peterkin left? What happened after that?
Answer: Gobby began to cry. He went to Witch Heyho, told her everything and begged her to make a spell to get rid of all the black beetles.
Witch Heyho did not punish Gobby and said that she really did not know how to stop the spell and that Gobby will have to put up with the beetles. She also told him that hedgehogs love to eat beetles. Gobby bought a hedgehog so that it could eat the beetles.
