With a bread knife Miss Martha made a deep slash in each of the stale loaves, inserted a generous quantity of butter, and pressed the loaves tight again. When the customer turned once more, she was tying the paper around them. Thus, she gave the buttered loaves to the customer.

Question 8: How did Miss Martha’s act of kindness ruin the artist’s work?

Answer: Miss Martha was an extremely sympathetic and kind person. Miss Martha felt pity for the artist as she assumed that he consumed stale bread every day. She went out of her way to add generous amounts of butter to the loaves. The artist used the stale bread to erase pencil marks on his drawing which in turn ruined the artist’s work.

It was for this purpose that Blumberger was buying the bread. Unfortunately, that day the buttered bread had ruined the draft and his chances for winning the competition. It was not good for anything except to be cut up into railroad sandwiches.
