The Midnight Charm Questions & Answers

Question 1: What did Tom tell Sid in order to avoid school?

Answer: Tom sawyer was unhappy on Monday morning because he did not want to go to school and wished to stay at home. He started to groan and pretended that he was in great pain. He forgave Sid for all his wrongdoings ever done to him. He told Sid to give his cat with one eye to the new girl in town. Sid immediately alerted Aunt Polly about Tom’s condition.

Question 2: Tom woke up to ‘Monday Blues’. Explain.

Answer: ‘Monday Blues’ is a type of expression used to signify laziness or dullness particularly on a Monday morning. Tom woke up sulking as it was a Monday and he had to go to school again. He did not want to go to school and wished to stay at home.

Question 3: How did Aunt Polly take out Tom’s loose tooth?

Answer: Aunt Polly tied one end of the silk thread fast to Tom’s tooth with a loop and tied the other to the bed post. Then, she seized the pan of burning coals and suddenly thrust it almost into Tom’s face. He jerked back and the tooth hung dangling by the bedpost.

Question 4: The ‘tooth trial’ brought with it a strange compensation. What was it?

Answer: As Tom walked to school after breakfast, he was the envy of every boy he met because the gap in his row of upper teeth enabled him to spit in an entirely new and admirable way.

Question 5: How did Tom win Becky’s friendship? What did he say to hurt her feelings?

Answer: Tom entered the school late one day and was quite prepared to make up a silly excuse, when he noticed that the only seat open on the girl’s side was next to the new girl, Becky. When the schoolmaster asked for an explanation, he proudly announced that he was with Huckleberry Finn. This invited immediate punishment from the disciplinarian. He was whipped and forced to sit next to her which suited him admirably. Tom tried to impress Becky with his drawing skills which were hardly remarkable and then introduced himself. At length he wrote words, ‘I love you’ and she blushed. Tom was still immature. This imbalance was evident when Tom accidentally revealed Amy Lawrence’s name and hurt her feelings.

Question 6: What kind of a person was Huckleberry Finn?

Answer: Huckleberry Finn was Tom’s best friend. He was a social outcast. He was the son of the town drunkard and did not have mother. He was morally free to do whatever he wanted. He dutifully followed Tom and did whatever he wanted. He wore hand me downs, never attended school, smoked and fished as often as he pleased, and slept wherever he wished. He was the eternal rebel, the misfit. Everyone including Tom, envied Huck, but the adults looked upon him as a social disgrace and a bad influence on their children.
