Answer: Cousin Helen said these words to Katy.

Answer: The class being referred to here is that of the lesson of Hopefulness.

(c) Name one teacher of this ‘class’

Answer: The Sun is the teacher of the class.

(d) Why do you think the speaker mentions this teacher?

Answer: Cousin Helen mentions the sun as a teacher of hopefulness because she wanted it to roll up the blinds in her room that she kept shut tight.

“Isn’t it horrid.”

(a) Who said this and to whom?

Answer: Katy said this to Cousin Helen.

(b) What was the ‘horrid’ thing mentioned by the speaker?

Answer: Katy referred to the sickly surroundings as horrid.

(c) Give three reasons why it was horrid?

Answer: It was horrid because the room looked dismal with the chairs set up against the wall and a row of medicine bottles on the chimney-piece. Moreover, Katy wore a dressing gown which was particularly ugly in pattern and she looked quite alone.

Answer: Clover and Cecy did not mind much at being kept away from Katy’s room because her room was very gloomy and she remained ill-tempered most of the time.

Answer: Cousin Helen noticed that Katy’s face had grown thin and her eyes had red circles around them from continual crying. Her hair was looking like a frowzy bush because she had run her fingers impatiently through it. She was in a calico dressing gown which, though clean, was particularly ugly in pattern. The room had a dismal look even though it was tidy, with chairs set up against the wall and a row of medicine-bottles on the chimney piece.

Answer: Katy wanted to study, help people and become famous. She wanted to teach the children of the house, Clover and Cecy and take care of them.

Answer: This line shows Cousin Helen also had gone through some kind of physical disability but she never complained about her life. She made herself strong and learnt to appreciate the little things in her life. She had got a victory over her problems mentally. She has developed an optimistic attitude towards her life. She was full of confidence. Katy felt much better after talking to her as Helen had overcome similar difficulties. She made Katy full of positive outlook.
