Answer: Dr Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He came from a humble background and started working from an early age to support his family. After school, he sold newspapers to support his father financially.

Answer: The important milestones in Dr Kalam’s career are:

  • After graduating, Dr Kalam joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as a scientist.
  • In 1969, Dr Kalam joined the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He was the project director of India’s first indigenous satellite launch vehicle.
  • In 1992, Dr Kalam was appointed as the scientific advisor in the defence ministry. He later also served as the principal scientific advisor to the Government of India.
