All the words of a sentence can be categorized into different kinds according to their uses and function. These are known as different parts of Speech. Within the sentence, these parts of speech indicate how the word functions in meaning as well as grammatically. When used in different circumstances, an individual word can function as more than one part of speech. So, it is essential to understand them so as to determine the correct definition of a word when using the dictionary. In the English language, there are eight parts of speech and below is mentioned their details.

1. Noun

A noun is a naming word. It is a name given to any person, place or thing. They also name quality and emotions. So, all naming words are nouns.
For Example –
Neha lives in Mumbai.
Honesty is the best policy.
My new dress is made of silk.

2. Pronoun

It is used in place of a noun or noun phrase to avoid repetition.
Pronoun = Pro (instead of) + noun.
For Example –
Rahul is tired. He wants to sleep.
Mother is drinking tea. She likes it to be steaming hot.

3. Adjective (Describing Words)

Adjectives are the words that describe, modify or tell us something more about a noun or pronoun. Depending on the gender or number of the noun, adjectives do not change their form.
For Example –
Nikhil is wearing a black shirt.
Mrs. Verma lives in a lovely house in the meadow.

4. Verb (Action Word or Doing Word)

A verb shows an action or a state of being or condition. It shows what someone or something is doing.
For Example –
Mohit kicked the ball.
They will announce the result tomorrow.
I smiled.

5. Adverb (Describes a verb)

An adverb describes a verb. It tells how, when, where, how often or to what extent an action is done.
For Example –
He sings loudly. (loudly describes how he sings)

An adverb also qualifies an adjective.
For Example –
As Ria was a little late, she missed the bus. (‘a little’ qualifies ‘late’)

It qualifies another adverb.
For Example –
She was driving very fast.

6. Preposition (Shows Relation)

The word preposition can be read as ‘pre’-position which means ‘placing before’. It is a word which is usually placed before a noun or pronoun and shows the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to another word. They can indicate time, place or relationship.
For Example –
Mishti is looking at something. (‘at’ shows relation between Mishti and something)
Mr. Sen reached before the train left the station. (‘before’ shows relation between Mr. Sen and train)

7. Conjunction (Joining Words)

A conjunction joins two words, ideas, phrases or clauses together in a sentence and shows how they are interconnected.
For Example –
It rained so heavily that the river was flooded.
You may either play or sleep.

8. Interjection (Expressive Words)

It is a word or phrase used to express a strong feeling or emotion and is often followed by an exclamation.
For Example –
Wow! I got first position in drawing competition.
Hurrah! We won the match.
