The Footsteps Die Out Forever Questions & Answers

Question 1: How do the people in the houses react to the carts on the streets? What are the carts used for?

Answer: The people in the houses are so used to the carts on the street that there are no curious faces at the windows and no one pauses in their work. But their eyes look carefully at the faces in the carts. The carts are used to take people from the prison to the guillotine.

Question 2: How do the people in the carts behave?

Answer: Some of the people in the carts observe the street calmly while others look on with a lingering interest in life. Several close their eyes and think, or try to get their thoughts together. Only one man sings and tries to dance. None of the riders appeal to the pity of the people.

Question 3: Whom do the horsemen point to? Describe this person’s behaviour.

Answer: The horsemen point to Sydney Carton, who they think is Charles Evremonde.

He stood at the back of the cart, with his head bent down, talking to a girl who was sitting on one side of the cart and holding her hand. He had no curiosity or care for the scene around him; he only spoke to the girl. Some people in the street shouted against him. He reacted to them, if at all, with a quiet smile, and shook his hair a little more loosely about his face.

Question 4: Why was the spy worried?

Answer: The spy was worried because he thought that Sydney Carton had cheated him and had fled from prison to escape being guillotined.

Question 5: What does the crowd’s reaction to Evremonde show?

Answer: The crowd’s reaction to Evremonde showed that as he was a member of the aristocracy, the crowd hated him so much that they wanted him to die.

Question 6: How did Sydney Carton comfort the seamstress?

Answer: Sydney Carton comforted the seamstress by holding her hand. He also reassured her by telling her that her death at the guillotine would be quick and blessed her.

Question 7: What were Sydney Carton’s last thoughts?

Answer: Sydney Carton’s last thoughts included a prediction. He saw a beautiful city, brave people and new life of peace and freedom. He saw the people living happily and prosperously in an England that he would see no more. He saw Lucie Manette with a child in her arms who would be called by his name and he knew that he would be fondly remembered and honoured in their hearts forever. He thought that his sacrifice was the best thing he had done in his life and his death would bring a better rest than he had ever known.
