Question 1: Fill in the blanks:

Answer: Maria was surprised on opening the priest’s letter box because there were two sparrows building a nest inside.

Answer: The priest put his ear at the letter box and he heard cheeping sound so, he realised that the eggs had hatched.

Question 4: Why did the priest not receive the archbishop’s letter?

Answer: The priest did not receive the archbishop’s letter because the postman had left the letter inside the letter box and no one had seen him coming. No one touched the letter box because there were baby sparrows growing inside and no one wanted to disturb them.

Answer: Maria burst into the old priest’s room to tell him that there were two sparrows building a nest in priest’s letter box.

Question 7: Why did the archbishop decide to test the old priest of Santa? How did he do it?

Answer: The archbishop decided to test the old priest of Santa because he thought that he had grown very old and should be replaced by a young priest. He decided that he would send the priest a letter and asked him to visit him within three days. If he reached the archbishop within three days, then he would pass the test and stay in Santa and if he would fail, he would be replaced by a young priest.

Answer: The sparrow parents carried food into the letter box because the baby sparrows could not fly and thus, could not feed themselves.

Question 9: Why did the old priest fail the archbishop’s test?

Answer: The archbishop’s letter was dropped off by the postman inside the letter box. No one saw the postman coming and no one opened the letter box because the baby sparrows were inside. So, the priest could not receive the letter on time and could not reach the archbishop’s place and thus, failed the archbishop’s test.

(c) How did the speaker decide to find out if the priest is too old?

Answer: The speaker (archbishop) decided to set a test to find out if the priest is too old. He would ask him to come to see him in three days. If he comes, he would be allowed to stay in Santa and if he doesn’t then, a new young priest would be sent to Santa.

Answer: The priest was a very kind and loving man so, the villagers loved him.

(a) Who said these words and to whom?

Answer: The priest said these words to the sparrows.

(b) Why must the speaker leave Santa?

Answer: The speaker must leave Santa because he failed the archbishop’s test and would be replaced by a younger priest.

(c) How did the speaker help bring up the children?

Answer: The speaker helped sparrows bring up the children by letting them build their nest inside the letter box and keeping them safe by locking the letter box from outside.
