Question 1: What unusual things struck Totto-chan when she stood at the entrance of the school?
Answer: Totto-chan noticed that the gate of the new school consisted of two short posts having twigs and leaves on them. The name of the school was blown askew and the gate posts were two solid trees.
Question 2: Why did Totto-chan’s mother run after her?
Answer: Totto-chan’s mother ran after her to stop her from entering the railroad cars which were actually the classrooms.
Question 3: What favour did Totto-chan want to ask the headmaster?
Answer: Totto-chan wanted the favour of getting herself admitted in the school.
Question 4: Why did Totto-chan have a moment’s uneasiness?
Answer: Totto-chan had a moment’s uneasiness because the headmaster had asked her mother to go out leaving her behind so that he could talk to her.
Question 5: Why had Totto-chan expected the headmaster to ask questions she would have to answer?
Answer: Totto-chan had expected the headmaster to ask her questions as she had come there for an admission and the headmaster would ask her questions before giving her admission.

Answer: Totto-chan got delighted on knowing that she was a student of the new school. She was interested in the classroom and really liked the school as well as the headmaster who was very affectionate to her.

Answer: Totto-chan’s mother was embarrassed to hear the questions.

Answer: The headmaster said so because he found Totto-chan quite interesting and he also wanted to make her full comfortable in the new place.
Question 11: Totto Chan was happy when the Headmaster said that she could talk about anything she wanted. Why do you think the Headmaster did so?
Answer: Totto-chan was expecting the Headmaster to ask her a number of questions which she was supposed to answer decently. But when the Headmaster said that she could talk about anything she wanted, she became very happy.
The Headmaster did so because he was an educational expert and could sense nervousness in Totto-chan’s words. So, he tried to create a healthy and friendly teacher-student atmosphere for Totto-chan. Moreover, he was a good listener and really understood the soul of a child. He knew how to respect his students.
