Answer: The three friends were feeling tired after a whole day’s rowing. They hauled up for the night under a great elm tree. They fastened their boat to its spreading roots. Here, they decided to append the night in their boat.
Question 2: How did they prepare themselves for the night?
Answer: First, they put a canvas on their boat and then had a hearty supper. After lying down comfortably in the boar, they started enjoying the beauty of the night.

Answer: The three friends enjoyed the beauty of the quiet night. They talked of the joys of travelling and of camping in the woods.

Answer: A man named Joe was travelling with George’s father. They stopped for the night at a little inn on the way.

Answer: Tom was George’s father and Joe was a friend of George’s father. They were travelling together and stopped at a little inn for the night. They joined the other fellow in the open compound of the inn. They spent the evening drinking with them. It was quite late when they left for their room to sleep.

Answer: Both Tom and Joe had to grope in the dark. It was quite late in the night when they went to their room to sleep. They were a little drunk. The candle in the room had gone out. So, they had to grope in the dark for their beds.
Question 8: Why do you think the two friends got into the same bed at the inn?
Answer: The candle in the room had gone out and it was quite dark. The two friends groped for their respective beds, and lay down in it. Being drunk, they couldn’t know it was the same bed on which they were lying.

Answer: Both Tom and Joe were lying in the same bed. Being drunk, each thought it was some stranger lying in the bed with him. Joe said he was going to chuck the other man out of the bed. At this, Tom said that he was also going to do the same thing.

He had often heard his father tell the same story and which he said had happened to him at ‘The Piggy Pub’.
