The Two Magicians Questions & Answers

Question 1: Read the line and answer the questions:

1. “Will you agree to my proposal?”

a. Who is the speaker? What was his proposal?

Answer: The speaker is Tripura Babu. His proposal to his student Surapati was to let him perform on stage in Lucknow show in his place.

b. Why had the listener not agreed to the proposal initially?

Answer: The listener (Surapati) did not agree to the proposal initially because it was the first time he was going to perform outside Bengal. The show would give a great boost to his career and he really depended on its success. He did not want to begin his new career with a lie that he was ill and his guru will perform in place of him.

c. Did the listener change his mind?

Answer: Yes, the listener changed his mind when Tripura Babu’s stare caused numbness and trembling in his whole body.

2. “Anil,” Surapati called, “Come here. Now watch this.”

a. What did Surapati show Anil?

Answer: Surapati showed Anil the magic performance with the coin and coral ring. This trick was a signature trick of his teacher Tripuracharan Mallik. It involved making a coin go rolling towards a ring and bringing them back to the magician.

b. What was Anil’s reaction?

Answer: Anil was shocked and surprised beyond measure to witness such an act before him. He was so terrified that he would have dropped the cup of tea which he had brought for Surapati.

c. Pick out the sentence from the text which tells us about Anil’s reaction.

Answer: The sentence from the text which tells us about Anil’s reaction is – ‘Anil would have dropped the cup he was carrying if Surapati had not stretched out a hand at the last moment and caught it mid-air.’

Question 2: How did Tripura Babu get Surapati to agree to his request?

Answer: Tripura Babu made use of his magic skills to get Surapati to agree to his request. When Surapati refused to listen to Tripuracharan Babu who wanted to perform in his place, Tripura Babu warned him that he had enough power to cause a magician embarrassment on stage. He could also make a magician completely helpless. Saying these words, he took out a pack of cards from his pocket and asked Surapati to bring a knave from the back of the pack to the front with his hand movements. On taking the pack of cards in his hands did Surapati realise that his fingers were gradually becoming numb. His arm was getting paralyzed. His entire body began to shiver with beads of perspiration appearing on his forehead. Tripura Babu, with the help of his skills and magical prowess had taken completely over Surapati’s body movements. The pack of cards fell from his hand and he realised that Tripura Babu’s warning had come true. He was rendered absolutely helpless and reluctantly agreed to his proposal.

Question 3: Why do you think Tripura Babu made that request of Surapati?

Answer: I think Tripura Babu made the request of Surapati because he had fallen on hard times. His hair had become qrey, skin had become sagged and eyes had sunk deep in the sockets. He must have been looking for a source of income for quite some time and on seeing his old student, he takes up the opportunity to earn some money. Also, Tripura Babu never had the opportunity to perform on stage before a large audience. In spite of harboring enough talent, he could not do much to showcase it before the world. Therefore, he viewed this as one opportunity where he could perform on stage and live his dream.
