Question 1: Why did the king want to know answers to three questions?

Answer: In order to become a successful ruler, the king wanted to know the answers to three questions.

Question 2: Messengers were sent throughout the kingdomMark your choice.

Answer:

i. to fetch wise men.
ii. to find answers to the questions.
iii. to look for the wise hermit.
iv. to announce a reward for those who could answer the questions.

Question 3: Complete the following sentences by adding the appropriate parts of the sentences given in the box.

i. Many wise men answered the king’s questions, but their answers were so varied that the king was not satisfied.
ii. Someone suggested that there should be a council of wise men to help the king act at the right time.
iii. Someone else suggested that the king should have a timetable and follow it strictly.
iv. The king requested the hermit to answer three questions.

Question 4: Why was the king advised to go to magicians?

Answer: In answer to king’s first questions, some of the wise men suggested that in order to decide the right time for doing something, it is necessary to look into the future and only magicians were able to do that. Hence, the king was advised to go to the magicians.

Question 5: In answer to the second question, whose advice did the people say would be important to the king?

Answer: In answer to the second question, some wise men suggested that the people most necessary to the king should be his councillors, some suggested it should be the priests. Few others said that it should be the doctors, whereas others said that king’s soldiers would be the most important people for the king to listen.

Question 6: What suggestions were made in answer to the third question?

Answer: In answer to the third question, some wise men believed that science is the most important thing, some suggested that the king should chose fighting to be the most important, and there were others who believed that religious worship should be on priority for the king.

Question 7: Did the wise men win the reward? If not, why not?

Answer: As all the three questions had different answers from all the wise men and the king was not satisfied with any of the answers, so none of the wise men won the reward.

Question 8: How did the king and the hermit help the wounded man?

Answer: The king and the hermit removed the man’s clothing. The king then washed and covered the man’s wound with his handkerchief, however, the blood kept flowing. The king re-dressed the wound until at last the bleeding stopped.

The king also brought fresh water for the man and with the help of the hermit carried the wounded man into the hut and laid him on the bed.

Question 9: Who was the bearded man?

Answer: The bearded man was king’s enemy. He came there to take the revenge of his brother’s death by killing the king and taking back his property which was seized by the king.

Question 10: Why did he ask for the king’s forgiveness?

Answer: The bearded man came with a motive to kill the king, however, the king saved his life, he was grateful as well as ashamed and asked for the king’s forgiveness.

Question 11: The king forgave the bearded man. What did he do to show his forgiveness?

Answer: The king forgave the bearded man. He assured that he will send his servants and his doctor to care of him and also promised to return him all his property.

Question 12: What were the hermit’s answers to the three questions? Write each answer separately. Which answer do you like most, and why?

Answer: The hermit’s answer to the three questions were:

i. The right time do something is ‘now’. It is the most important time because it is the only time, we have any power to act.
ii. The most necessary person is the person you are with at a particular moment, as no one knows what will happen in the future and whether we will meet anyone else.
iii. The most important thing is to do good to that person, as we are sent in this world to help other and that is our sole purpose.

I like the third answer the most, as helping other is something which keeps you at peace and if everybody follows this answer, this world will be a much better place to live in.
