2. “..he has taught us the true value of a farmer’s greatest treasure.”

(a) Who said these words?

Answer: Farmers of the village said these words.

(b) Who does ‘he’ refer to?

Answer: ‘He’ refers to Maosha San.

(c) What is a farmer’s greatest treasure?

Answer: A farmer’s greatest treasure is the seeds/grains which he sows. To farmers, the most important and precious thing should be seeds. Since the farmers were starving, they exhausted every bit of the grains which they had. Therefore, no amount of grains or seeds was left for them to sow the following year in order to grow new crops. Maosha San was the only one in the village who had stored grains for all of them which helped them come out of the difficult situation. It was then that the farmers realised the true value of storing grains – their greatest treasure which help them earn their livelihood.

Question 3: Describe and analyze the character of Maosha San with reference to the situations in the text.

Answer: Maosha San was the most generous, sensitive, wise and reasonable person in the entire village. He was a true visionary who could foresee events. He was the only one who stored away his best wheat grains so that they could use them to sow seeds later. In spite of the pathetic situation in the village where people were starving and getting weaker by the day, he did not lose hope. When his son Aisu was disappointed on learning that they could not eat the grains, Maosha San asked him to be patient and hopeful. He also made him understand what a farmer’s greatest treasure was. On seeing his only child getting weaker by the day due to hunger, he gave up on his food and poured his gruel in Aisu’s bowl. He did not think about his health at all. When the time came for new seeds to be sown for the crops, Maosha shared his precious wheat grains with everyone. He gave his life in order to protect the grains – a farmer’s greatest treasure. The farmers paid tribute to him by remembering his contribution foreover.

Question 4: lt is obvious from the story that Maosha was a generous man. But was Aisu generous too? How do you know this?

Answer: Maosha was thoughtful and generous when he saved the sack of wheat for the future. Initially, Aisu could not understand why his father didn’t let them eat and satisfy their hunger. However, he listened to his father’s words of wisdom and moreover shared the wheat grains with every other farmer in the village happily. He abided by his father’s decision and supported his decision of sharing the grains with the others. This proves that he had a big heart and he wasn’t selfish in any way.

Question 5: Do you think the villagers should have made preparations for the next year as Maosha did? Why do you think so?

Answer: Yes, I think the villagers should have made preparations for the year just the way Maosha had. Except for him, none of the other villagers thought about their future. For them, satisfying their hunger was the only important thing. They did not realise that if they didn’t have grains to sow, they would be left without a livelihood. Thus, when the time came to sow the crop again, the rest of the village had no seeds left and had it not been because of Maosha, they wouldn’t have been able to sow any grains for the year.
