I saw a man
Attack a tree today
The road from
Mysore To Ooty
About twenty miles along it
There you’ll see a tragic sight.

i. What does attack mean? How was the man attacking the tree?

Answer: The word ‘Attack’ means to hurt someone. But in this poem, it means ‘to cut’. The man was attacking the tree by cutting it.

ii. Where does the road go from?

Answer: The road goes from Mysore to Ooty.

iii. What does ‘a tragic sight’ refer to?

Answer: ‘A tragic sight’ refers to mutilated, ripped, crippled and dead trees.

Question 2: In the poem, the words ‘A line of noble trees’ tells us that the poet

Answer:

i. admires trees
ii. hates tress

Question 3: Why do you think the poet says, ‘Let them come….To look once more on their life’s work’?

Answer:

i. Those who planted them will punish the men.
