Question 1: Fill in the blanks:

(a) The beggar was begging from door to door in the village path.

Question 2: What was the beggar doing from door to door?

Answer: The beggar was begging from door to door.

Question 3: Where was the beggar begging?

Answer: The beggar was begging in the village path.

Question 4: What did he see in the distance?

Answer: He saw a golden chariot in the distance that was approaching towards him.

Question 5: What did the beggar hope to get?

Answer: When the beggar spotted the king’s chariot in the distance, his hopes soared. He hoped that the king would give him enough alms so that he need not beg for the rest of his life.

Question 6: Why did the beggar’s hope rise?

Answer: The beggar’s hope rose since he thought his evil days were coming to an end and he would be bestowed with wealth from the king so that he need not beg for the rest of his life. He thought that he would now bid goodbye to poverty.

Question 7: Why did the beggar feel the king’s request to be jest?

Answer: When the king’s chariot stopped in front of the beggar, the king stepped out and holding his palm in front of the beggar asked him for alms. The beggar was utterly shocked.  He could not believe that the king would take alms from a beggar.

Question 8: How did the beggar respond to the king’s request?

Answer: The beggar thought it was in poor jest that the king was stretching out his hand for alms. He recovered his wits and very hesitatingly handed the king the smallest grain of corn that he had.

Question 9: Explain ‘my evil days were at an end’.

Answer: When the beggar saw the king’s chariot in the distance, his hopes soared. He expected to get generous alms from the king and thought he would no longer need to beg and would lead a comfortable life. Thus, he felt that ‘his evil days were over.’

Question 10: The beggar regretted his action at the end of the day. Why?

Answer: The beggar found a grain of gold among the alms at the end of the day. He was filled with regret and realized that had he been generous, the king would have rewarded him tenfold. He realized that due to his selfish behavior, he had lost much. He also realized that he had met none other than God himself and wept bitterly over his selfish behaviour.

Question 11: What according to you is the moral of the poem?

Answer: We should be generous and always help others with whatever little we have.
