Most of the baggage was tied to the top of the bus in a towering pile.

a. What did the ‘baggage’ contain?

Answer: The baggage contained gifts for the family like embroidered shawls, boxes of rose and pistachio sweets and medicines.

b. Where was the bus headed? Describe how it looked.

Answer: The bus headed towards Barkana. The bus was painted with scenes of bright pink and yellow flowers, neon orange tigers, snowy mountains and also decorated with jangling chains, luggage tied on the top.

c. Were the passengers comfortably settled inside the bus? What did they do during the journey?

Answer: No, the passengers didn’t settle comfortably inside the bus. They were crammed in and fighting over the window seat to look outside through the dirty window and talking during the journey.

Up there, we were higher than the rocky peaks all around us.

a. Where was this place? Name it.

Answer: The place was a mountain pass and the name of that place is Sky Turn, the gateway to Shangla Top.

b. What could be seen in the distance? Describe the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Answer: In the distance, it could be seen the snows of Malam Jabba, a ski resort.
By the roadside, there were springs and waterfalls. The place was all covered with mountains. The air was clean and fragrant with cedar and pine.

c. How could people advance to other places from this point?

Answer: People could advance to other places from that point only by rope bridges or on a pulley system through which people swing themselves across in a metal box.

There was no hospital.

a. Which place does the sentence refer to?

Answer: Barkana was the place the sentence referred to.

b. Did the people have absolutely no access to medical healthcare?

Answer: Yes, the people didn’t have any access to medical healthcare.

c. What did the people do when they fell ill?

Answer: If anyone fell ill then, they had to be carried out by their relatives on a wooden frame to the near village Shahpur which had a clinic. If it was anything serious then, they would have to make a bus journey to Mingora.

Question 5: In what Way does the text blend the description of the beauty of swat valley with the message of peace?

Answer: In this text we could see the beautiful description of nature and simple lifestyle of the people who live there. When the bus moved, we could see the beautiful landscape of green paddy fields and orchard, mountains covered in snow, the clean fragrant air, the sight of the white mountain bathed in golden sun. The people who live there think that the valley is their entire world. The white mountain was a symbol pf peace of their land, a white flag which they could see from everywhere.
