The Letter A Questions & Answers

Question 1: Arrange the following events in the correct order.

Answer:

…1…The chalk in his sister’s hand attracted Chris.
…5…Chris put out his left foot and made a wild jerking stab with the chalk which produced a crooked line.
…3…Mother wrote the letter ‘A’ on the floor deliberately.
…4…Mother told Chris to copy the letter ‘A’.
…2…Chris reached out with his left foot and took the chalk from his sister’s hand.
…6…With Mother’s encouraging hand on his shoulder, straining every muscle in his body, Chris managed to draw an ‘A’ on the slate.

Question 2: Why was Chris not baptised and given a name for quite some time after his birth?

Answer: Chris was not baptised and given a name for quite some time after his birth because he was in hospital and his mother was sent to recuperate for some weeks after his birth.

Question 3: Why did Mother and Father decide to seek medical advice?

Answer: Mother and Father decided to seek medical advice because Mother noticed that when Chris was four months old, his head kept falling and whenever she removed her hand, it would drop again. His hands were clenched all the time and were inclined to twine behind his back. He could not sit up straight without pillows when he was six months old and at twelve months too, things did not change.

Question 4: What was a hard blow to Chris’s mother? How did she react?

Answer: Almost every doctor who examined him, labelled Chris as an interesting but hopeless case. Many of them said gently that he was mentally defective and would remain so. This was a hard blow to Chris’s mother. She did not accept this truth that nothing could be done for him. She could not and would not believe that he was an imbecile who was beyond saving, beyond cure and beyond hope.

Question 5: What did the mother decide to do then? How was this a ‘momentous decision’ for Chris’s future?

Answer: Mother decided to take matters in her own hands, determined to treat Chris the same way as she did others and not as the ‘queer one’ in the back room who was never spoken of when visitors were present. This was a ‘momentous decision’ for Chris’s future as it meant that he would have his mother by his side to fight all the battles that were to come, and to inspire him with new strength when he was almost beaten.

Question 7: At what point where Mother and Father had refused to accept that Chris was an ‘idiot’, what did mother decide to do and why was she successful?

Answer: At the point where Mother and Father had refused to accept that Chris was an ‘idiot’, Mother was set to prove it. She was successful as she did it not because of any rigid sense of duty, but out of love.

Question 8: Why did Chris say that all the others were ‘waiting for a miracle’?
