Question 1: What did Kalam study at the Madras Institute of Technology?

Answer: Dr Kalam studied Aerospace Engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology.

Question 2: Where did he join as a scientist?

Answer: As a scientist, he joined the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Question 3: Why was he known as the ‘Missile Man of India’?

Answer: Dr Kalam was closely associated with India’s civilian space programme and military development efforts. He thus came to be known as ‘The Missile Man of India’ because of his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.

Question 4: Name any two books that he has written.

Answer: Two of the books written by him are Ignited Minds: Unleashing the Power Within India and Wings of Fire.

Question 5: What was Dr Kalam’s life as a young boy like?

Answer: Dr Kalam ’s father owned a ferry while his mother was a housewife. He was the youngest of four brothers and a sister. His family lost much of its property and he sold newspapers to supplement the family’s income as a young boy. Though an average student, he took great interest in mathematics and was devoted to his studies.

Question 6: Why did he think children were important? Give reason for your answer.

Answer: Dr Kalam believed that children were important because he thought they were the hope for the future. He wanted to help them to ignite their imagination and prepare them to work for a developed India for which the road map was already available. He wanted young people to have the courage to think differently, to invent, to travel the unexplored path, to discover the impossible, to solve problems and to succeed.

Question 7: What legacy did he leave behind on the President’s Estate?

Answer: In the President’s Estate, Dr Kalam was responsible for the digitization of the library, a tactile garden for the visually challenged, a health centre, street lights, pavement, new staff quarters and above all, for opening the Rashtrapati Bhavan to everyone.

(a) What do you think his statement means?

Answer: This statement means that the most important aspect of Dr Kalam’s character is his simple nature which was completely devoid of any pride.

(b) Why do you think such a characteristic is important or useful?

Answer: Such a characteristic is important as well as useful because it helps you to keep learning and acquire knowledge. It makes you interact with all sections of society so that you are able to perceive their problems and empathize with them. This is what makes you endear yourself to everyone you come across.

(c) Give an example from the text where he provides a simple solution to a problem.

Answer: Dr Kalam collaborated with Dr Somaraju and the two scientists and developed the Kalam-Raju stent, a low-priced, safe and effective device which could be used in place of the expensive coronary stent costing over 60,000 rupees.

Answer: Teachers should give students the wings to fly.

Answer: The above written words mean that students should be given means to dream, to imagine, to explore and shape their own destiny. No shackles should be imposed on their imagination. They should be free to explore, to learn, to dream and achieve the impossible and not surrender to fate.
